Installing Thermo-Tec Heat Wrap on a Cummins Downpipe When it comes to making reliable horsepower in a diesel truck, most enthusiasts focus on fueling, airflow, and tuning. But managing heat is just as important, especially on a turbocharged Cummins where exhaust temperatures can quickly climb under load. Excessive heat radiating from the downpipe can raise underhood temperatures, affect nearby wiring and components, and make the engine bay a less-than-friendly place for everything around it. That’s where Thermo-Tec’s exhaust heat wrap comes into play. Designed to contain heat within the exhaust system, the wrap helps reduce radiant heat while potentially improving exhaust gas velocity. For this project, we installed Thermo-Tec heat wrap on the downpipe of a Cummins-powered truck. It’s a straightforward afternoon project that requires only basic hand tools and a little patience. A quick soak helps reduce airborne fiberglass particles and allows the material to conform more easily around bends and curves. Even though we didn’t (but should’ve), put on gloves before handling the wrap. The material can be irritating to bare skin, and gloves will make the entire process much more comfortable. Start at the Turbo End Begin wrapping at the turbo outlet side of the downpipe. Secure the first few inches with a stainless locking tie, making sure the wrap is tight against the pipe. As you continue down the pipe, overlap each pass by roughly one-quarter to one-half of the wrap’s width. Consistent overlap creates a cleaner appearance and ensures even insulation coverage throughout the entire length of the pipe. The key here is tension. Pull the wrap snug as you work. Loose sections can shift over time and leave gaps that reduce effectiveness. Work Around Bends and Transitions The Cummins downpipe features several curves that require a little extra attention. On tighter bends, slightly increase the overlap to prevent gaps from forming on the inside radius. Take your time and keep the wrap flat. Wrinkles and bunching may not affect performance significantly, but a smooth installation always looks more professional and tends to hold up better over the long haul. Secure the End Once you’ve reached the bottom of the downpipe, trim the excess material and install another stainless locking tie to secure the final section. Before reinstalling the pipe, inspect the entire wrap job for loose spots or uneven coverage. Add additional ties if necessary, particularly near mounting points or areas that may experience vibration. Reinstall and Heat Cycle Reinstall the downpipe and reconnect any components removed during disassembly. After everything is tightened and checked, start the engine and allow it to idle. Don’t be alarmed if you notice some smoke during the initial heat cycle. This is completely normal as moisture evaporates and the wrap cures. After a few heat cycles, the material will settle into place and take on its final appearance. Finishing Up For a relatively inexpensive modification, Thermo-Tec heat wrap offers noticeable benefits on ANY truck. By keeping more heat inside the exhaust stream and reducing radiant temperatures under the hood, you’re helping protect surrounding components while creating a cleaner, cooler engine compartment.
