This 1,600HP Fummins Could Be Yours
Chris Buhidar and the folks at Truck Source Diesel have had a hand in many Cummins conversions, and this pristine example both looks the part and performs like it should. The 1,600hp recipe starts with a Freedom Racing Engines common-rail 5.9L with a stage 2 D&J cylinder head, Mahle monotherm pistons, Carrillo rods, 14mm main and head studs with a girdle, and a No Limit Manufacturing billet cam. Two S&S 12mm CP3’s support 350-percent over injectors and custom-built compounds based around an S476 and a 98mm Garrett GEN2 GTX55 are part of the package, too. A competition BTS 4R100 handles the shifts. Trust us, you can’t build one from scratch for anywhere near the asking price of this truck, which is $65,000.
Besting the 4x4 7.3L Power Stroke record he already owned, Brian Jelich recently sent his ’00 F-350 through the eighth-mile in 5.40 seconds. Yes, the engine is still HEUI-fired. Yes, it’s nitrous-fed and single turbo’d. Yes, he still tunes the truck himself. And yes, it’s still shifted via a 4R100. When Brian isn’t pushing his 4,000-pound burgundy dinosaur into new territory in the eighth, he competes in the 5.90 Index category. Brian and this Ford have been pushing the 7.3L envelope for nearly two decades now. His previous best E.T. through the eighth-mile was 5.46.
It’s a been a long time coming, but Logan Yelton and his beautiful black first-gen, coined “The Fossil,” are getting down the track in low-6-second fashion now. Logan has been working the bugs out of this rolling work of art the past couple of seasons, but it looks like the P-pumped, Scheid-built Cummins may be ready for 5.90 Index competition in the Outlaw Diesel Super Series come spring. Logan’s Dodge represents one of the few mechanical engines still competing in the upper ranks of ODSS drag racing. Logan also indulges in four-wheel drive burnouts in the water box, and who doesn’t love that?!
Without question, diesel shops see a lot of different types of failures. And for Southern Truck Pros in Houston this one may be the ultimate example. Apparently, this 6.0L Power Stroke was treated to a fuel tank full of diesel exhaust fluid—the urea/water mixture that you use on ’11-later trucks with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emissions systems. How in the world did this happen to a 6.0L Power Stroke you might ask…For that, we have no answer. But it’s DEFinitely going to cost the owner (at least) a brand-new fuel system. Ouch.
The fall running of Diesel Truck Wars went down over the weekend and there was no shortage of exciting side-by-side action or carnage. Perhaps the worst of the latter happened to Justin Duffy. After giving his 5.90 Index Duramax “all the nitrous” in his 2,000hp tuneup, the S480 decided it’d had enough and exploded in catastrophic fashion, which started a fire. Luckily, Justin had a fire extinguisher with him in the truck and immediately went to work snuffing out the blaze. The damage done under the hood was extensive, but it definitely won’t break Justin. He even let it be known that if the engine is OK he and the truck will be back on the track in a couple of weeks.
It’s getting to be the time of year where truck and tractor pulling champions are crowned and banquets are held. This year, Daniel Whalen earned top honors in the Illinois Tractor Pulling Association. His second-gen Dodge edged out Second Place puller, Linda Burk, in the 7,800-pound Pro Stock Diesel Truck class. It’s not the first time Daniel has taken home the championship in this class, either. In addition to his winning combination, Daniel takes great pride in keeping his equipment looking ship-shape. If you ever spot the “Cumminzed Out” Dodge in the pits, move in for a closer look. It’s one of the cleanest Pro Stock trucks you’ll find.
Having quality replacement engines available to the general public without long lead times was the goal with Freedom Racing Engines’ new Cummins long-block program—and the Pittsboro, Indiana company nailed it. Its Street series and Street HD series 5.9L and 6.7L long blocks feature a reconditioned block that’s been decked, bored, torque plate honed, align honed, pressure tested, and coated in black paint. The Street HD long block option adds oversize ARP main studs and hardened main dowels, new H series main and rod bearings, a Fluidampr with full power kit and 5/16-inch dowel installed in the crank snout, and ARP Custom Age 625+ head studs.
