Ryan Riddle’s Third-Gen Drag Truck Gets Some “Forced” Upgrades
From the farm to the highway, construction equipment to gen-sets, and emergency vehicles to the trucks we drive every day, diesels have built—and continue to build—America. Be it due to their durability, mechanical simplicity, or horsepower potential, these oil-burners are a cut above the rest—and we have 10 of the best diesels ever concocted to tell you about in the pages that follow.
We’ll bet you didn’t know that diesel engines have long been a part of the model aircraft world. Simplified, less expensive engines didn’t enter the market in a big way until after WWII, and here comes the diesel content. WWII saw advanced diesel engine technology and exposed many more people to it, so it was no wonder the model aircraft engine hobby took a stab at downsizing it once the war was over.
Quelling a ’12 Ram’s Axle Wrap Issues with Flight Fabrication Traction Bars
With 500 hp and 1,000 lb-ft so easily achieved these days thanks to custom tuning, axle wrap becomes a problem more quickly than you might think. It’s no secret that traction bars are an age-old way of stopping axle wrap, but not all traction bars are created equal. We decided to give Flight Fabrications a call when we encountered a recently tuned ’12 Ram 2500 in desperate need of rear wheel stabilization.
Coolant Pump And Filtration In One From DieselSite
The 7.3L Power Stroke is known as one of, if not the most reliable diesel powerplant ever offered in a Ford. While it’s not the most powerful engine, it really doesn’t suffer from many major problems. One problem it does have is the water pump. The factory block is manufactured using a sand-casting process which, unfortunately, contaminates the coolant passageways with sand. This sand wreaks havoc on the water pump. Filtration and a better pump, is the cure.
Changing the overall gear ratio of a vehicle changes the top speed, the rate of acceleration, and the power to the wheels (the ability to do work). With no gear multiplication, vehicle speeds would be limited to whatever the engine was churning out throughout its rpm band. But gearing is something most of us don’t really know extremely well. Well, now you do. Here’s our rundown on gearing.
You can’t buy trucks like this anymore, but if you’re a dyed-in-the-wool second-gen fan, you can certainly do your best to preserve one, restore it, or even transform it into the ride of your dreams. With a preference for the ’94-’02 body style, a love of the VP44, and a background in truck pulling, Michael Asher treated his garage-kept ’01 quad cab to a cab-on resto and enough go-fast parts to make a cool 550 rwhp.
