Sometimes the simplest of ideas are the ones that make the most sense. Take for example, getting more air into the factory intake on late-model Ford Super Duty pickups and Excursions. If you lift the flexible cover on the driver side between the grille and core support, you will notice the Power Stroke's huge 4-inch oval air intake. The other thing you will notice and wonder is "Where does the air come from that feeds this inlet?" There are solid bulkheads on either side of the inlet so the only air that gets to the inlet is drawn from below it. Certainly not the optimal situation for performance. While many Power Stroke owners recognize this shortcoming and get the hole saw and chicken wire out to mangle their grille for more air, there is an easier, and more stylish option...the Airfury Cold Air Induction Maximizer from the folks at Dr. Performance in Weatherford, Texas. The device is so simple you'll be asking yourself, why didn't I think of that? In a nutshell, the Airfury is a fresh air inlet system that allows cool, outside air to be directed into the factory air inlet behind those bulkheads. The system comes with a template that allows you to cut the bulkhead behind the grille to route fresh air inside. The Airfury is basically an air duct and cover that routes in fresh air and keeps debris and bugs out, all of which is hidden behind the factory grille.
Available for both 7.3-liter and 6.0-liter Super Dutys and Excursions, the folks at Dr. Performance claim the Airfury can improve your mpg, drop your EGTs and improve throttle response by simply getting more air into the engine more quickly. They also claim the setup can move an additional 100 cfm of air at 60 mph. Since all of this sounded too good to be true, we found a high-mile '03 Ford Super Duty with a 6.0-liter powerplant and a fresh factory air filter. The truck already had a high-flow exhaust system on it, so we figured a little extra air up front couldn't hurt. The install is easy enough for the average driveway mechanic. With the Airfury in place, there was a noticeable increase in throttle response and better wide-open throttle performance. If you subscribe to the "more air in, more air out" performance principal, and own a Ford Super Duty or Excursion, then the addition of an Airfury Cold Air Induction Maximizer might be worth looking at. 1. The Predator Airfury comes complete with all the necessary mounting hardware and complete instructions for easy installation. | 2. The first step of the install is to remove the grille. Four screws hold the top section. | 3. The lower section is held in place with four clips. With everything disconnected, the grille can be removed. | 4. To make the install even simpler, the Airfury kit comes with a template to show where the grille bulkhead will be cut. | 5. This photo shows the root of the problem. Notice that the factory air intake "dead ends" into a V-shaped bulkhead just behind the grille. The Airfury will open the right side of this bulkhead for fresh, outside air. | 6. As per the instructions, after tracing the template on the bulkhead, pilot holes are drilled into each corner. | 7. The toughest part of the install is cutting the plastic bulkhead. | 8. Here's what things looked like after the first pass with the saw. You'll also notice the opening is directly in front of the air intake. In fact, you can see the air filter in the background. | 9. Some filing and cleanign will be necessary to make for a perfect fit for the Airfury assembly. |
