A Utah Diesel Tradition Lives On
For the 12th consecutive year, Edge Products of Ogden, Utah, held their annual Weekend On The Edge diesel-only event in late October. And like years past, this unique gathering of everything diesel consisted of a Friday night drag race and a Saturday dyno competition and sled pull. Jared Venz, Marketing Manager for PowerTeq, the parent company of Edge Products and Superchips, claims that 4,000 fans and 200 competitors joined in for the two-day weekend diesel fun.

Known for his EFI Live Duramax tuning, Zach Fuller of Starlite Diesel was out on the track in the E/T Bracket class with his 2010 diesel Volkswagen Jetta running a 17.25 dial time.

This 1999 Cummins owned by Travis Cherry of nearby Plain City, Utah, put down 442 hp Saturday morning after running a 14.6@91mph the previous night at the drag event.

Russ Prescott is the owner/driver of “All Jacked Up,” a DT466 International Diesel-powered Ford truck and one of the leaders in the Pro Mod Diesel pulling class on the United Pullers circuit. We were quite surprised to see Prescott out testing his skills on the asphalt in his daily driver, a 2011 6.7L Power Stroke.
Drag racing at Rocky Mountain Raceway in Salt Lake City kicked off the action Friday night. At nearly a 4,400-foot elevation and with the brisk evening temperatures hovering in the lower 40s, quick quarter-mile times and traction can always be a challenge at RMR. Thanks to good track prep by the RMR staff, times didn’t suffer too much.

David Radzierez brought the Xtreme Diesel Performance diesel monster truck to the Edge event where it was on display at the Edge Headquarters. He did get to crush some cars during the sled pull event as well.

Craig Resinger of Clinton, Utah, and his silver 2005 Cummins competed in both the Work Stock sled pull class and the E/T Bracket racing, where he finished second overall.
Competitors were split up into three classes. E/T Brackets, a class for the everyday street trucks, had entries running anywhere from mid-12s to low 20-second dial times. With bracketing racing, reaction time and consistency are the name of the game.

This bad to the bone white Cummins made the trip out from Fraser, Colorado, and piloted by owner Chris Hillison it ripped off multiple low 11-second passes, which is quite an accomplishment running street tires on the cold 4,400-foot elevation asphalt track. The truck also made a fourth place finish in the 3.2 Inducer pulling class.
Colton Houghton’s 2006 Duramax finished the night on top with a 13.87 clocking at 85.23 mph. The Quick Diesel class was a 12.0 Index class, meaning the first truck to the stripe without going faster than 12 seconds would take the win. Most entries in this class were GM Duramax, but when the smoke had settled the ’98 Cummins owned by Todd Welch of Cedar City, Utah, took home the win with a 12.1 second pass at 107.5 mph.

The Edge-sponsored Pro Mod pulling truck, owned by Ken Jones of Wild Diesel, had the body up throughout the day showing off the 2,000+ hp 12V Cummins under the hood.

Custom two-tone paint scheme and 22-inch wheels with plenty of Cummins power to back its appearance under the hood… Could the Gen 1 be making its comeback?
The Unlimited Class is a “run what ya brung,” don’t red light and be the first to the stripe style drag race. Most entries in this class are competition-only trucks that run 10-second quarter-mile times. In this class, roll cages and additional safety equipment are required. Trent Nell of Extreme Prejudice Racing made one of the quickest passes of the night, but was beat out in the final round by Chris Hillison of Fraser, Colorado, in his common rail Cummins with an 11-second run at 121 mph.

As one of only a handful of female-owned/driven trucks, Crystal Dunning piloted this nearly brand new 6.7L Dodge to a 249-foot pull in the Work Stock Diesel class. Look for her in Diesel World Magazine’s February Girls Gone Diesel issue.

This stickered up and highly modified LML Duramax put down 477 hp and 1,082 ft-lb of torque, even with its giant 37-inch rolling rubber.

Nick Child of Price, Utah, a seasoned veteran on the Rocky Mountain Raceways drag strip, had his 6.7L-powered Cummins entered in both the drag racing and dyno competition. With an S472 single turbo and ATS-built transmission transferring power to the ground, he ran consistent low 13s and broke 500 hp on the dyno.
Saturday’s festivities up the road at Edge’s headquarters in Ogden started out with a dyno completion and open house. With two separate in-house dynos running for most of the day, the PowerTeq employees were able to dyno test over 80 entries. Multiple vendors were on site for the afternoon showing off new products and interacting with the public. A catered lunch and the Xtreme Diesel Performance diesel-powered monster truck were also part of the open house gathering.

At first glance, you might think this old ’85 Ford was sporting the old school pre-Power Stroke indirect injected 6.9L motor, but a close look at that “C” fender badge tells the true story.

On the pulling track, the Work Stock class seems to be dominated by the Cummins and Duramax-powered trucks, but this 7.3L Power Stroke proved the old Ford still has its place on a dirt track, and when built right, can hang with the best of them.
Finishing off the weekend at Pioneer Stadium in Ogden, the crew at United Pullers organized the big sled pull event that was open to both gas and diesel competitors. In the spring of 2012, United Pullers had announced that Edge Products would be the new title sponsor for the Pulling Series and The Weekend On The Edge pull would wrap up the 2012 season, which finished off the year with a bang.

Our insane dyno number expectations were once again surpassed by this truck owned by Dmitri Millard. With a monstrous 1490 fuel-only horsepower number, the twin-turbo LB7 Duramax under the hood proved once again it remains king of the dyno competitions.

This old school Chevy truck powered by a 12V Cummins made its debut on the drag strip only to be D/Qd from the competition due to a failed exhaust tip. Regardless, we love the ingenuity of the popular Cummins-powered transplant vehicles that have become so popular these days.
With one of the largest crowds of the season, this event brought out a long list of competitors for the Work Stock, 2.6, 3.0 and 3.2 Inducer Diesel classes. The Pro Mod Diesel class is also a crowd favorite with a couple 2,000-hp Cummins, a two-stroke Detroit and an International DT466-powered entry. The pull ran clear into the midnight hours.

Our previous thoughts on the Gen 1 Cummins making a comeback were confirmed when this big black Dodge rolled onto the dyno. Sporting a hood stack and some big turbos under the hood, this VE injection pump motor put out some pretty impressive horsepower numbers.

Jake Johnson of Blackfoot, Idaho, made the drive down to compete in both the E/T brackets and Quick Diesel class, running mid 12s for most of the night. The LB7 Duramax dynoed more than 650 hp Saturday morning.
Taking home the 2012 Edge Pulling Series point championships were Trevor Collings (Work Stock), Weylin Richards (2.6 Inducer), Tom Hansen (3.0 Inducer), Kortney Neifenegger (3.2 Inducer) and Joel Carlson (Pro Mod Diesel). We can’t wait for the next Edge event to come around next fall. For more information on the event, as well as results and companies involved, you can visit www.weekendontheedge.com.
